What to expect

Support groups are a chance to connect with others who may have similar experiences. You can share as much or as little as feels right for you.

Some people come to talk, others come to listen. There is no pressure to speak, and many people find comfort simply being in a space where they feel understood.

All groups are led by trained facilitators who help create a safe, respectful and supportive environment.

Our eating disorder peer support group is open to anyone aged 16 and over with an eating disorder or who is struggling with disordered eating.

Is a support group right for me?

Support groups can help at many different stages.

  • If you are seeking help for the first time, they can be a
    gentle first step.
  • If you are currently in treatment, they can offer additional
    support.
  • If you are in recovery, they can be somewhere to return to
    when needed.

You do not need to attend every month – come when it feels helpful. Many people say they leave feeling less alone, more hopeful and more understood.

A safe and respectful place

We ask everyone attending to follow a few simple shared guidelines:

Confidentiality

What is shared in the group stays in the group.

Respect

Everyone is different. We listen without judgement and treat others with kindness.

Recovery-focused discussion

Please be supportive and avoid sharing potentially triggering details.

No pressure to talk or feel a certain way

You can listen quietly if you like, and it is okay to feel upset, frustrated or emotional.

This service was life changing, the counselling I received was excellent – I have tried a few different types of therapy before, but this was by far the most effective, something just clicked. Thank you to Izabela and the whole team at SYEDA for helping me to understand my disordered eating and to find a path forward.
