CBT-T is a ten-session evidence-based therapy for adults and adolescents with non-underweight eating disorders (including bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and others). Cognitive-behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa (CBT-AN-20) is a 20-session evidence-based therapy for those with mild-moderate anorexia nervosa (and other restrictive eating problems, such as atypical anorexia nervosa).

CBT-T is predominantly offered in a group format either in person at our Sheffield office, or online via Microsoft Teams. CBT-T consists of up to 10 sessions, following a progress review at session 4. CBT-T consists of five phases which you will work through flexibly with your therapist depending on your needs:

  1. Early dietary change and exposure
  2. Behavioural experiments to help challenge your thoughts and feelings
  3. Addressing emotional triggers that drive eating behaviours
  4. Body image work
  5. Relapse prevention

CBT-AN-20 is offered in a one-to-one format, either in person at Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, or Barnsley, or online via Microsoft Teams. CBT-AN-20 consists of up to 20 sessions, following a progress review at session 6. CBT-AN-20 consists of five phases which you will work through flexibly with your therapist depending on your needs:

  1. Early dietary change and exposure for weight regain
  2. Behavioural experiments: new foods and weight maintenance
  3. Addressing emotional triggers that drive eating behaviours
  4. Body image work
  5. Ending and relapse prevention

To access CBT, please complete a referral form via Get Help. Your referral form will be discussed in our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting to assess initial suitability for our service. You will then be invited for an assessment to further check suitability for our service, and to assess which treatment might be most appropriate.

CBT-T is a time limited therapy which consists of up to10 sessions plus two follow-up sessions. CBT-T is an evidence-based structured therapy for both adults and adolescents.

The therapy is aimed at people who are at a near healthy weight, or above, and are displaying eating behaviours that are similar to bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and others.

The aim of CBT-T is to develop a healthy and sustainable relationship with food and your body. From session one, you will need to jump in and challenge your behaviours around food. Whilst this feels scary, it leads to a positive long-term outcome.

CBT-T is spilt up into five different phases:

  1. Early dietary change and exposure
  2. Behavioural experiments to help challenge your thoughts and feelings
  3. Addressing emotional triggers that drive eating behaviours
  4. Body image work
  5. Relapse prevention

The above components are applied flexibly depending on your needs. CBT-T is a very intense, active and engaging therapy and you will be required to engage in all aspects of the programme.

The full CBT-T model is up to 10 sessions long. Initially, clients are offered 4 sessions and then a review takes place. This is because early therapeutic change is the best predictor of how well you will do in therapy. If sufficient change has been achieved, we continue with the treatment. Follow-up sessions are given 1 and 3 months following completion of the programme. Follow-up sessions provide the opportunity to practise maintaining the positive changes made through therapy, whilst still receiving support.

To benefit from the therapy:

  • You must agree to attend the sessions each week. If you are unable to attend please let us know 24 hours in advance. Please avoid booking holidays during the weeks of your therapy.
  • You will need to complete the food diaries and homework set each week.
  • A once-a-week weight review, and knowing your weight, are key parts of the therapy. You must be able to resist weighing yourself in-between sessions. If you are attending remote sessions and do not already have scales, you will need to buy / borrow a set of scales prior to commencing therapy.
  • You will be asked to complete questionnaires weekly to help monitor your progress.
  • You must be committed, open and willing to make changes. This will include adopting a pattern of regular eating within the first 4 sessions.
  • The emphasis is on changing your relationship with food and your body and therefore it is important that you are not actively trying to lose weight over the 10 week period (i.e. ‘dieting’ or restricting). Therefore, if you would like to lose weight, we ask that you put this goal aside for the duration of the sessions.
  • You will need to be honest and open with your therapist regarding any changes in your mood and eating behaviours.
